Q1) I am a windows guys now doing Linux for the last 8 months. I am
not
ready for Red Hat nor am I a novice. LPI and CompTIA recommend the
following certification path: Linux+, LPIC-1, LPIC-2 and LPIC-3. I
think I
can skip Linux+ and start with LPIC-1. What is your opinion on this?
(From
Sindrich)
ANS) LPI is definitely more challenging. It covers a wide range of
Linux
topics including basic command-line tasks, managing processes, backing
up
data, managing users and groups, Linux networking with TCP/IP, working
with Windows, and more. It comprises of two exams based on
multiple-choice
and fill-in-the-blank questions. These test candidates' familiarity
with
commands and options and also -- crucially -- their ability to use
them.
LPI has aimed this certification at systems administrators who have
about
a year of real-world Linux experience.
In contrast, Linux+ is a genuinely entry-level program that is aimed
at
individuals with only six months of Linux experience. It tests
candidates'
basic competency in Linux through a single multiple-choice test.
Linux+
also covers the same topics as LPIC-1, but not in the same depth. If
you
think you can handle LPIC-1, feel free to skip Linux+.

Mark Barnard says certifications should not be linked to jobs.
"This is my response to a last week's question, that asked if
CCNA would
help candidates get a job. I think it is time people stopped linking
certifications to jobs blindly. Getting a job takes a lot of things as
you
pointed out -- from education to experience. Certification should be
seen
as an added on but important credential. It cannot be a substitute for
either education or experience. I believe certifications cannot
replace
college education. IT is essentially a problem solving job. Nothing
but
good college education and hands-on experience can teach this.
Certifications certify your skills with a product. Just that. Jobs are
given to people with lot more attributes."
